Leaving school can be a scary thought, especially when you have been there for at least 10 years - that's a long time! We want to make sure that you make the right choices - and hey...it's not easy to get that right first time either.

If you're practical and enjoy the prospect of developing those employability skills, then you might want to consider an apprenticeship. This means that you earn while you learn and even better, you don't have to pay for your course! Another option for you to consider if you're in S3-S6 is one of our Vocational Pathway courses where you get the chance to be a student every Friday. These courses allow you to progress up the learning ladder, at the same time you will achieve an SQA or college certificate at the end of the year.

I really don't know what I want to do but I'm willing to try anything that will get my foot on the learning ladder.

Hey... Don't worry about it because we've just introduced a fab new course. It's called Get Ahead and it's for 15 year olds who are eligible to leave school in December. It's really cool. Imagine getting the opportunity to try 24 different subject areas and 7 different workshops. Awesome! After this course, you could try one of our Winter Start courses or a Targeted Pathway course.

I want to start college but I need to stay at school until xmas?

OK...We have courses which start in January:

Army Preparation

Introduction to Engineering

Introduction to Motor Vehicle

NC Digital Media

Introduction to Hair and Beauty

Introduction to Business Management and Accounting

Access to Further Education

Targeted Pathway - Engineering

HNC Business

BA (Hons) Literature

BA Scottish History

BA Scottish History & Archaeology

BA Scottish History & Politics

BA Business Management

These courses are a stepping stone which will allow you to follow on to our full-time courses which start in August. We also have a brand new course starting on 23rd January 2012, which is for those who are leaving school in December or have recently left in the past year. If you want to step ahead of the rest and gain those vital skills for employment then check out this full-time course.

Can I study Highers at college?

Of course you can... there are Advanced Highers in English, Maths, Chemistry and the new Scottish Baccalaureate Project in Science. Also, a range of Highers and Intermediate 2 subjects which you can study at college. There is also an option to study Highers online which means you don't have to attend college too often but beware... you need to be well organised and motivated for online study - Is that you?

I don't have any Highers, so will that stop me from achieving an HNC or above?

Definitely not.. it might take you a year or two longer but you can apply for a National Certificate and this will open a door for you to progress to an HNC - provided you pass your assessments!

How do I go about applying for a course?

If you are applying for an Access, NC or NQ course then you should download this application form. School leavers applying for a UHI degree should apply through UCAS even if only applying to one institution. If you are applying for an HNC or HND, and applying to no other institution you can use the Inverness College application form. However if you are applying for Higher Education (HNC and above) to more than one institution you will have to apply through UCAS.

I need more information about courses, funding, accommodation, college life - my head's buzzing!

Don't worry about it all - take one step at a time. Come along to one of our Open Days/Evenings and start to gather some information which will help you to make your decision. Give us a call or drop me an email and we can help you to get on the road for this exciting journey you are about to embark upon.
