Project Updates
Research & Scholarship Programme
Three projects have been funded by the College's Research & Scholarship Programme over 2010. Here are summaries of the latest developments in the projects to date.
Jed McKernie & Kirsten Grant - Sport and Physical Fitness Participation at Inverness College: a research project to identify the best way forward
Ross Cairns - Northern Exposure - an investigation into the potential energy consequences of transporting building materials to the north of Scotland for domestic house construction
This project was funded by the research councils ESRC and MRC to establish a research network of academics from across the UK working in a diverse range of disciplines including medcine, environment, well-being, epidemiology, rural health, outdoor adventure and education. The project ended in June 2010 but the network remains enabling researchers to work together on projects researching outdoors and health. In September 2010 the project was reported to the research councils and researchers in the wider theme of Understanding Individual Behaviours at a meeting at UCL. A pdf of the presentation given at the meeting can be found here.
The European COST Action Forest Energy project had a recent (October 2010) meeting in Trento, Italy. Eighty people from the project attended, representing 30 countries. There was an opportunity to see harvesting and woodfuel supply in the Italian Alps and a combined heat and power plant. The meeting concluded with a day long conference with members of the COST Action presenting the results of research to an audience of over 300 people from across the forestry energy industry in Italy.

Technical Medical Innovation Partnership
The TMIP got fully underway at the start of October 2011 with the first two students recruited to the Electrical R&D department of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The students have been working on the development of products designed to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems from across NHS Highland. They completed their projects in February this year and reported to the steering group on the development of the products they had been working on and how much they had gained from the experience of working in the R&D department. The next group of students will start work in September, with products already in the pipeline for development.
River Carron Project
In 2010 the River Carron had the most successful year to date, since the start of the restoration programme 15 years ago. Approx. 400 salmon were caught on the Carron in the 2010 season. Keep an eye on the River Carron website for the latest information.
