This degree, based at the Scottish School of Forestry campus of Inverness College UHI, aims to give you the skills and knowledge needed to be a competent forest or arboricultural manager, capable of providing professional advice to the land-based sector.

You will have the option to specialise in either forest conservation or arboriculture and urban forestry.

The course relies heavily on fieldwork-based projects and the practical aspects of either forest or arboricultural conservation and management.

Course content

This course offers the flexibility to exit at various stages with a valuable qualification. After one year of successful full-time study you will gain an HNC, after two years, an HND, and after three years a BSc.

BSc Sustainable Forest Management (with Forest Conservation) covers the following subjects: woodland ecology in the landscape; woodland conservation; landscape interpretation and design; forestry for people – policy and practice; methods of site assessment and impact assessment; environmental impact assessment; integrated land use; introduction to GIS; environmental economics; capital project planning; implementation and management; environmental change; forest resource utilisation; earth heritage conservation; and woodland ecology and management.

BSc Sustainable Forest Management (with Arboriculture and Urban Forestry) includes the following: wood technology for amenity trees; planning in arboricultural management; woodland ecology in the landscape; woodland conservation; landscape interpretation and design; forestry for people – policy and practice; methods of site assessment and impact assessment; environmental impact assessment; integrated land use; introduction to GIS; environmental economics; capital project planning; implementation and management; environmental change; forest resource utilisation; earth heritage conservation and woodland ecology and management.
