National 5 Chemistry SQA Level 5

What is special about this course?

Chemistry, the study of matter and its interactions, contributes essential knowledge and understanding acros all aspects of our lives.  Chemistry explains the links between matter and the macroscopic properties of the world.  Chemistry research and development is essential for the introduction of new products and the chemical industry is a major contributor to the economy of the country.

National 5 Chemistry is a one-year course designed to build on knowledge and understanding carried out at Standard Grade/National 4 level so as to lead on to Higher Grade Chemistry.

Entry requirements

  • Standard Grade Chemistry at grade 3 or above or
  • Pass in National 4 Chemistry or
  • Pass in Intermediate 1 Chemistry and
  • Equivalent of Standard Grade English and Maths at grade 3 or above

What can I do on completion of my course?

Further and higher education courses. The varied skills, knowledge and discipline that the course can provide will give you a good starting point for further training leading to careers in areas such as scientific research, chemical manufacturing, and medicine.  The challenging theoretical and practical aspects of the course will also prove an execellent introduction in food sciences, health and technology.
