A free public lecture in Inverness next month will explore the history of Scottish maritime warfare.
Organised
by the University of the Highlands and Islands Centre for History, the
“Terror of the Seas” seminar will challenge the notion that, due to lax
marine policing, Scotland made a disproportionately large contribution
to the Golden Age of piracy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The
lecture will be delivered by Professor Steve Murdoch from the Institute
of Scottish Historical Research at St Andrews University who has
written an award winning book on the subject. It will take place at
Inverness College UHI from 5:15pm on Wednesday 1 February.
