Environmental Policies
As a publicly funded institution and the provider of a public service, the College has a duty to ensure that all accommodation is provided and run in the most environmentally friendly way. In addition to seeking to address an accommodation need, the College will strive to ensure that buildings are designed to achieve optimum environmental benefits. It will also seek to ensure that the strategy is undertaken to achieve environmental advantage and that services are provided in the most energy-efficient way. Specifically, therefore, the College will ensure that all improvements to the estate have regard for the need to maximise the student-learning experience.
The College will adopt an environmental approach considering the following for sustainable architecture:
Design and Construction
The College is aware that, in November 2006, the Scottish Executive set targets for the level of recycled material specified in public projects, in line with the Executive’s commitment to sustainable development, sustainable procurement and recycling. It is understood that in construction applications, at least 10% of the total value of materials used on projects over £1m should derive from recycled or re-used content.
Reducing energy needs through good design, the employment of natural means of lighting and ventilation, the use of the “stack effect” to avoid air conditioning, the use of craft-based labour, as against machine production, at the building site, good packaging to avoid waste at the construction site, design for ease of dismantling and component reuse, are all considerations.
Building Use
The employment of energy management systems, high levels of insulation, janitorial training to save energy and waste, good maintenance programmes to preserve components and improve durability, measures to limit damage by vandals are all part of the impact judgment.
Demolition
The recycling or re-use of materials and components, the letting of demolition contracts subject to recycling clauses, the health risks in dust from demolition, the careful design of how to re-use rather than demolish existing buildings on site.
