Carpentry student carves out the top prize in National competition at Inverness College UHI
David with Angus Macleod MBE, Head of Construction and Forestry at Inverness College.
One
of Inverness College UHI’s most talented Carpentry and Joinery students has
hammered the competition by being named winner of the SkillBuild National
Competition for Carpentry, which took place at South Lanarkshire College.
David MacDougall, 19, of Dochfour Drive, Inverness is an apprentice joiner with
Morrison Construction in Inverness and is currently carving out a career
fitting kitchens on a Morrison housing site in Tain.
Having taken up his block release training at the College, David is thoroughly
enjoying putting the new skills and knowledge into practice and believes that
the course has helped him come out on top against more than 120 participants.
David, who had to build a roof assembly for the competition, commented: “I had
to use all of the skills I have learned in building the roof assembly and the
teaching I have received at Inverness College has made a huge impact on my
ability.
“I would like to thank all of the lecturers at the College, without whom I
would not have the necessary skills to win an award like this one with more
than 120 competitors. I would also like to thank my employers Morrison
Construction for giving me my apprenticeship.”
Angus Macleod MBE, Head of School of Construction and Forestry, commented: “Young
people like David MacDougall will be the lifeblood of the construction industry
in the future and I wish him further success when he competes in the British
Finals in Leeds in September.”
“The high standards set by the College and by local employers in the Highlands
and Islands is evidenced by the list of success stories produced by our
students in recent times. At a time of deep recession in the construction
industry I would recommend employers to think positively about investing in the
modern apprenticeship scheme this summer. “
