Contemporary Art Practice students at Inverness College UHI will be hanging faces in the perfect places this month as they launch not one, but two graduation exhibitions of their work – showcasing their work both on and off-campus.

Following a year of hard work from the HNC Contemporary Art Practice students, the class of 2011 are revealing to members of the public the fruits of their labour in what will be the third consecutive Graduation Exhibition for Inverness College UHI.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Faces, places, spaces’, encompasses a diverse range of challenging and thought-provoking artwork which explores the personal interests, concepts and ideas of each individual student whilst reflecting the many concerns and issues facing us all in the world today.

HNC Art Exhibition

Opening first at Inverness College UHI’s Midmills Campus from June 15th to 22nd, the ‘Faces, places, spaces’ exhibition is a celebration of personal creative talent, demonstrating the value of art to society and the local area. The artwork, which has been created by successful students looking to pursue art as creative entrepreneurs after their studies, will then move to the Inchmore Gallery from June 25th to July 9th.

One particular artist’s work worth keeping an eye out for is Jiri Krystlik. Originally from Prague and now living in Inverness, Jiri, 31, has already been asked to exhibit his work at the world-renowned Brick Lane Gallery, famous for displaying the work of graffiti artist Banksy.

Meanwhile, both Jiri and classmate Joanie Ross, 50 from Skye, have been offered the opportunity to exhibit at Inverness’s newest art space, the Hung Gallery, located in Inverness city centre and offering art lovers the opportunity to see the best contemporary and cutting edge art in the Highlands.

After graduating, all of the students exhibiting are continuing their involvement with art, either through continued education at one of the various colleges across Scotland, or through work in their own studios.

Joanie Ross, who will be exhibiting in the Hung Gallery, said: “I feel the work has become very personal to me, as this was not only about completing my HNC but also about delving into my heritage, my life and how I have become an artist.”

“After all these years I have now found my creative side again. I feel at peace and find myself once again making collages on the lawn from stones found on the shore in the same way that I did in my youth.”

Faith Lockett, 19 from Inverness, who also studied the HNC, said: “I enjoyed the freedom and also the conceptual aspects of the course.”

Charlotte Wilson, 19 from Inverness, a student on the course, said: “The course has enabled me to tackle issues that are important, but that are often treated lightly.”

Mark Lomax, Programme Leader, HNC Contemporary Art Practice, said: “This is a great opportunity for Inverness College UHI students to exhibit their work both inside and outside of the College.

“The interest and support shown to us by the Inchmore Gallery has spurred the students on to produce even stronger work, and has given them that all important first entry on their CVs.”

Opening times for the exhibition are: Midmills Campus 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday; Inchmore Gallery 10.00am – 5.00 pm Wednesday to Saturday.
