Automotive Engineering HNC

What is special about this course?

This Higher National Certificate will provide you with skills that are relevant to the modern automotive engineering industry.

You can study part-time in the evening, ideal if you are already working in the industry and want to add more formal skills to your practical experience.

On successful completion of the course you should be able to analyse automotive engineering problems, and apply a logical and systematic approach to diagnosis of components and interdisciplinary
vehicular systems.

Entry requirements

  • 2 Scottish Highers at grade C or above OR
  • 2 A levels at grade D or above
  • Should include English, Maths or Physics, OR
  • Successful completion of an automotive programme of study, eg SVQ Level 3 VRQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair OR
  • A minimum of five years working as a technician in the Automotive Engineering Industry
  • Applicants may be called in for interview

Access routes

  • SVQ Level 3, VRQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent automotive programme of study

Year 1 - HNC

Subjects include:

  • Automotive engineering principles and technologies
  • Vehicular systems
  • Understanding of components and integration of the associated systems
  • You will develop specialist competences in the automotive engineering sector: Light Motor Vehicle

How will I study my course?

  • Part-Time (Structured): evenings
  • You will learn through a combination of face-to-face and practical work

How long will my course last?

  • Part-Time: 2 evenings per week for 2 years

Fees are payable in advance each academic year unless otherwise agreed.

International students

What can I do on completion of my course?

Successful completion of the HNC will equip you with skills sought after by employers such as good practical, diagnostic, problem solving and communication skills and a good knowledge of current vehicle systems. With suitable experience you may gain employment as a:

  • Master technician
  • Service adviser
  • Workshop controller
  • Service manager
