What is special about this course?

Are you employed in electrical engineering or electrical installation? Are you looking for an opportunity to expand your knowledge and understanding? Whether you've just completed your apprenticeship or you already have a number of years’ experience under your toolbelt, this programme may have something to offer you. Offered to employees at the request of employers, you may already have strong support to pursue these studies.

The course, by Day Release, provides you with a programme of study in electrical engineering subjects to help you develop your skills and knowledge. The course is open to all who are interested and qualified to apply, however its focus is on building knowledge in electrical theory, systems and apparatus, particularly for those employed in such areas. On successful completion you will gain a HNC Electrical Engineering.

  • Computer-aided electrical installation design uses the latest industry-standard software
  • You will study in-depth, relevant electrical engineering principles and how they are applied to electrical systems
  • The course is delivered part-time by day release over two years, allowing you to continue in work, or giving you the flexibility to work around other commitments

Entry requirements

  • One Higher at grade C or above in either: Physics; Technological Studies; or Higher Mathematics, PLUS
  • Three or more National 5 passes at B or above including: Mathematics; Physics or Engineering; Science; or English
  • Standard Grades 1-2 or Intermediate 2 passes including: Mathematics; Physics or Technological Studies; or English
  • Alternatively, National Certificate Group Award in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering; successful completion of the first two years of the SECTT Electrical Installation Modern Apprenticeship; or successful completion of the first two years of the SECTT Adult Training Scheme
  • Prospective students without the standard entry requirements as listed above are encouraged to apply. In such a case, applicants would need to demonstrate ability to work at a rate and level associated with HNC studies

  • DC and AC principles
  • Three phase systems
  • Electrical safety
  • Electrical machine principles
  • Application of electrical and electronic instruments
  • Electrical engineering
  • Graded unit 1 (examination)
  • Quality management: an introduction
  • Electrical installation design (computer-aided): an introduction

How will I study my course?

  • Part-time (structured)
  • You will learn through a combination of face-to-face presentations and tutorials, practical tasks and reports, and online study via the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) with support from your tutors

How long will my course last?

  • Part-time (structured): 2 years @ 6 hours per week in class (for 34 weeks per year)

You will need to plan approximately 6 hours per week self-study outside of classes.

Funding

Future Leaders Fund
The Future Leaders Fund, supported by Fred. Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall, offers two bursaries for students studying on one of the following courses:

  • HNC Civil Engineering
  • HNC Electrical Engineering
  • HNC Engineering Systems

The bursary per student will be to the value of £5,000 each. Application deadline is Friday 26th of August. Visit our Future Leaders Fund page for further information.
