What is special about this course?

If you want to develop your expertise in fashion make-up and related activities, this HNC is ideal for you. A creative, innovative programme of study, it allows you to develop your skills in make-up techniques, personalised to your own individual interests.

The course covers essential and classic make-up skills, fashion and photographic techniques, alongside hairdressing skills that focus on styling techniques and long hair design. You will have the opportunity to produce a professional portfolio of work that will support you in gaining employment in this vibrant and exciting, fashion-related industry.

Entry requirements

  • 1 higher at grade C or above in a relevant subject area and a core skill profile at SCQF level 5
  • Alternatively, hairdressing or beauty course at SCQF level 6 or S/NVQ 3 or equivalent
  • Applicants with relevant work experience will also be considered on an individual basis
  • All applicants will be interviewed and will complete an interview task as part of the selection process e.g. producing a creative make-up plan

Year 1 - HNC

You will study units in:

  • Essential make-up
  • Fashion and classic make-up
  • Presentation skills
  • Hairdressing techniques
  • Eyelash and eyebrow techniques
  • Work placement

How will I study my course?

  • Full-time
  • Part-time (structured)
  • You will learn mainly though practical workshops and demonstrations, with some lectures as well as access to online support materials. Participation in fashion shows, events and activities will be an essential part of this study programme. These events may be out with the normal hours
  • Additional costs will be applicable beyond that of course fees. All students will be required to purchase a make-up kit and brushes, at a cost of approximately £400. Other costs may include travel costs to work placements and costs associated with portfolios or photographic prints

How long will my course last?

  • Full-time: 1 year @ 15 hours per week
  • Part-time (structured): 2 years @ 7 hours per week

Once you have successfully completed this course, you might like to consider a career as a make-up artist, working with high-fashion make-up companies or freelance, working with photographers, hair stylists and model agencies.
