Sports Studies Level 6

What is special about this course?

This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of the sport and leisure industry, allowing you to specialise in either outdoor pursuits or traditional sport and fitness. It particularly suits people who are already participating in sport.

Outdoor pursuits route:

The course is built around two National Progression Awards (NPAs) - Sport Development and Exercise & Fitness Leadership - and practical days, which provide access to various outdoor coaching qualifications including Mountain Biking (British Cycling, Level 1), Scottish Canoeing Star Awards (providing access to coaching qualifications) Climbing (providing access to the Climbing Wall Leader Award) and skiing.

Activities take place in the Highlands including Cairngorms National Park, Glen Affric, the Fannichs, Ben Nevis, Ben Wyvis, the Black Isle, the Moray Coast and on long-distance paths including the Great Glen Way and Speyside Way.

An international ski trip in Europe takes place January (optional).

This course provides access to the BA (Hons) Outdoor Education and Learning.

Sport and fitness route:

The course is built around three National Progression Awards (NPAs) - Sport Development; Exercise and Fitness Leadership; and Organising Volunteering Events in Sport. You will study practical units including badminton and basketball, and develop your underpinning knowledge in nutrition, health and safety, anatomy and physiology. You will gain confidence in planning and leading practical group exercise and coaching sessions.This route is aimed at people who want to progress further in coaching or personal training.

Entry requirements

Candidates will be expected to have the following requirements;

  • Three passes at national 5 (or equivalent), or successful completion of either;
  • NC Sport and Fitness
  • NC Outdoor Pursuits

Outdoor pursuits route:

  • Sport development opportunities in the community/and in an organisation
  • Nutrition
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Mountain biking
  • Kayaking
  • Climbing - indoor and outdoor
  • Skiing

Sport and fitness route:

  • Sport development opportunities in the community/and in an organisation
  • Organising a sporting event
  • Developing volunteering - you will spend time volunteering in a sporting area of your choice, and learn how to support volunteers in the industry
  • Sporting event marketing and operations
  • Circuit training/fitness testing
  • Programme development
  • Coaching sessions
  • Nutrition
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Practical units including basektball and badminton
