Life Sciences Innovation Centre building

This event is funded by the University Innovation Fund via the Scottish Funding Council, delivered by create from 4pm - 6pm (followed by a buffet tea), and will be hosted at the new Life Sciences Innovation Centre. 

Please confirm your attendance via Eventbrite along with dietary requirements for those joining us for the buffet tea.

Vicky Johnson, Professor of Childhood, Youth and Sustainability and Director of the UHI Centre for Living Sustainability will facilitate the event along with Ian Freeman, Lead for the Scottish Government’s Climate Legislation and Adaptation team.  The team is responsible for developing Scotland’s new 5-year policy programme responding to the social, economic, and environmental impacts of climate change.

Alice will give us an insight into the various community groups and initiatives that are running a variety of climate action projects across the Highlands from bustling repair cafes to community orchards and innovative refill shops

George Gunn, Climate Strategy Officer at Moray Council

George will discuss his groundbreaking research which was carried out in Inverness to investigate the effects of man-made structures, surfaces and the weather.

The aim of the project was to measure the impacts of the 'urban head island' effect - a phenomenon where buildings, roads and other infrastructure absort and emit more heat than the surrounding rural environment, raising warmth in built-up areas.
