Working with Local Primary Schools – Raising attainment through partnerships
A number of new policies and Government initiatives linked to careers education, gender equality, raising achievement, closing the attainment gap, developing the young workforce and widening access lend themselves to strengthening partnerships with local primary schools and increasing the work we do with children before they enter secondary education.
The principle learning theme for the programme is raising awareness and strengthening aspirations through investigating career options and pathways. The workshops will also challenge gender bias within the world of work.
The project involved working with four primary schools from the city centre area of Inverness and will be followed through into Secondary one, two and three in the secondary school that recruits from this catchment area. This will allow us to work with the pupils in the important transition years from primary to secondary education building on skills and knowledge relating to employability and career at different stages in their education.
A series of three interactive workshops for Primary 7 pupils designed to build self-awareness and to enhance pupil’s understanding of potential career opportunities and pathways. The final session involved a visit to the college with various taster sessions. The aim of the programme is to equip pupils with the awareness, skills and knowledge to make more informed choices whilst challenging stereotypes within the world of work. We will continue to expand these skills through follow-on workshops in Secondary School 1, 2 and 3.
