The NPA contains 5 units that will support you to develop an understanding of how children develop and learn, how to communicate effectively with children and support play. It provides information relating to child protection in practice.

Course content...

Safeguarding of Children and Young People unit will help you to understand what is meant by the term ‘safeguarding’ in relation to child protection and abuse. This will identify current legislation, policy which promote the rights of children and young people. You will investigate the role and responsibility of the adult in supporting the safeguarding of children and young people.

Promote the Wellbeing and Safety of Young Children unit will give you the opportunity to investigate the wellbeing and safety of children and young people, and to consider the role of the adult in supporting the wellbeing and ensuring the safety of children and young people.

Play for Children and Young People unit will emphasise the importance and benefits of play and introduce you to the theories of play. You will explore the role of the adult in supporting play by developing play opportunities for children and young people.

Communication with Children and Young People unit will highlight different communication methods with children. It will include the communication needs, wishes and preferences of children. Factors that might create barriers to communication with children and young people will be investigated, to identify ways in which barriers may be reduced. You will be introduced to the principles and practices of confidentiality in the work setting.

Development of Children and Young People unit will help you to understand the principles of development and how children progress across the ages/stages of development. You will study the theories of development and gain an understanding of the influences and circumstances that may affect development.

Entry requirements

Three passes at National 5 ideally including a literacy subject.

You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the early years, childcare and playwork sector and have an interest in working in this sector.
