Biology National 5

What is special about this course?

Biology, the study of living organisms, plays a crucial role in our everyday life, and is an increasingly important subject in the modern world.  Biology is relevant to everyone, and biologists work to find solutions to many of the world's problems.  Advances in technology have made the study of biology more exciting than ever.

This National 5 Biology course will give you the opportunity to understand and investigate the living world in an engaging and enjoyable way.  It will develop your interest and enthusiasm for biology in a range of stimulating relevant and enjoyable contexts, as well as providing you with deeper understanding of the underlying themes of biology.  The scale of topics covered ranges from the molecular through to whole body systems and on to biodiversity and ecosystems.

Entry requirements

  • Pass in National 4 Biology, or
  • Equivalent qualifications or experience

You will develop an understanding of DNA and how the structure of the genome leads to the basis of evolution and biodiversity. Genomics is studied as one of the major scientific advances in recent times. Metabolic pathways and their control are considered along with the conditions in which organisms survive and their means of coping with these. The interdependence and complex interactions between organisms is explored and sustainable food production, with the fundamental process of photosynthesis at its core, is investigated.
