What is special about this course?

This 5-month course, developed in partnership with the Civil Engineering Contracting Association (CECA), aims to address the skills gap within the industry by developing a future talent pipeline of Civil Engineering Operatives in Scotland.

This is a highly practical, hands-on course which will include site visits to establish industry links and prepare you for future employment. On successful completion of the programme, you will gain a NPA qualification in civil engineering, and an interview with an employer at the end of the programme, offering a direct route into the industry as a civil engineering operative.

  • Employers have signed up to CECA to guarantee a 75% employment rate as Civil Engineering Operatives for successful candidates.

Entry requirements

  • One pass at national 4 or relevant work placement taster in industry.
  • Learners are likely to benefit more readily from study of the award if they enter with a general and broad academic ability showing an aptitude at SCQF level 3 and above for English, Mathematics and other related technical and graphical subjects.

  • Set out secondary dimensional work controls: an introduction
  • Install road drainage
  • Lay kerbs and channels
  • Excavate holes and trenches
  • Reinstate ground conditions
  • Form concrete structures
  • Lay and finish concrete
  • Work readiness
  • Skills portfolio

Fee information for FULL TIME Further Education courses

If you have been living in the UK for at least 3 years, are ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full time course. Please check our Fee Waiver Policy.

Full time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible. We will use the information provided on your course application form to determine whether you are eligible.

What can I do on completion of my course?

Employment

This programme is being run as a national pilot and is supported by Civil Engineering Contractors Association and their industry members. As part of this programme the successful candidates will be given an interview as part of an employer event at the end of the programme. Employers have signed up to CECA to guarantee a 75% employment rate as Civil Engineering Operatives for successful candidates.

Progression

This programme offers progression onto:

  • MA Civil Engineering Operations,
  • NC Civil Engineering, or
  • NC Built Environment.

Successful candidates may also be eligible to apply for a construction trade apprenticeship.
