Arctic Charr Conservation
Using molecular approaches to support evidence-based conservation strategies
Arctic charr are a keystone species in many large, deep lakes and lochs across the UK. However, their preference for cold, clear water makes them particularly vulnerable to pollution and rising temperatures.
We are involved in several projects aimed at generating critical evidence to support the conservation of this enigmatic species. These include the development of eDNA-based frameworks for site condition monitoring, as well as the Lake District Arctic Charr Recovery Project (LD-CHARM).
LD-CHARM is a collaborative initiative led by the Freshwater Biological Association. It takes a holistic approach to researching Arctic charr populations in the Lake District. IBFC researchers are contributing by investigating genetic diversity and population differentiation.
