What is special about this course?

National 5 Mathematics is a course designed to build on knowledge and understanding carried out National 4 level Mathematics, and could lead on to Higher Mathematics. The course explores many core topics including percentages, statistics, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and also aims to apply the skills developed to problems based on real-life scenarios.

Our videos, quizzes and lecturer support are designed to help you achieve this qualification which is often vital for further education and for many careers.

Entry requirements

  • Pass in National 4 Mathematics
  • Applications are welcomed from mature students, or those who have left school and do not possess formal qualifications, but have the skills to meet the academic demands of the course.

National 5 Mathematics can be studied online or face to face on campus. If you choose our open learning option, then there are no timetabled classes - you are required to study and submit regular assignments from home using the online Brightspace Virtual Learning Environment. This makes the course ideal to organise your learning around work or childcare commitments. Guidance and feedback will be provided throughout the course by your lecturer and final examinations are on site in Inverness.  Please tell us in your application if you would like to study online or on campus face to face.

What can I do on completion of my course?

National 5 Mathematics and National 5 Applications of Maths are often included in the entry requirements for further and higher education courses. The varied skills, knowledge and discipline that the course can provide will give students a good starting point for further training leading to careers in areas such as scientific research, teaching and nursing. If you wish to develop your mathematical skills - you can progress to the Higher Mathematics or Higher Applications of Mathematics course
