Preparation for Uniformed and Emergency Services SCQF Level 4

What is special about this course?

This course is designed to give students an insight into the employment opportunities within the uniformed and emergency services e.g. the police, fire service, army, navy and RAF, aand to prepare you for a full range of army entrance tests, including core skills and fitness.

This is an UHI Inverness certificated course and on successful completion of all units students will be awarded the SQA National Certificate in Army Preparation at SCQF Level 4.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for applicants.

Entry is at the discretion of the course team and you will be required to attend an interview.

In this course you will study:

  • sporting activity - mountain biking;
  • sporting activity - hill walking;
  • sporting activity - orienteering;
  • map reading and land navigation;
  • problem solving;
  • assisting with an event.

These adventure training units are designed to help you work as a team, build confidence and develop skills required for uniformed and emergency services and sporting industries. Activities take place within the Inverness area including the Cairngorms, Glen Affric and the Great Glen, Learnie Red Rocks Trails on the Black Isle and Fyrish Monument, Ross-shire.

These units will enhance your fitness levels and coaching skills, developing confidence and knowledge. Activities take place in our four-court sports hall and state-of-the-art fitness suite.

Core units will enhance your existing skills and prepare you for further study, entry exams or the world of work.

    If you have been living in the UK for at least 3 years, are ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full time course.  Please check our Fee Waiver Policy.

    Full time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible. We will use the information provided on your course application form to determine whether you are eligible.

    Additional costs

    You will be required to purchase a kit/uniform as part of this course (approx £500). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered. http://www.inverness.uhi.ac.uk/study/funding/

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    On completing this course, you will have a much greater understanding of the range of careers in the uniformed and emergency services and sporting industries. Many students go on to successfully apply to these services, or pursue employment in the fitness or outdoor industry.

    Many students progress on to further study, including SCQF 5 Outdoor Pursuits, or SCQF Level 5 Sport & Fitness, leading to Level 6 Sports Studies and beyond.
