Practical Preparation for the Forestry Industry SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

This practical forestry course will prepare you to enter industry with the skills and knowledge to perform at craft or supervisory level on either a self-employed or employed basis. 

The course provides the underpinning knowledge and skills to enable you to progress to HN level Forestry and/or Arboriculture and Urban forestry courses. 

Entry requirements

School leavers who have no industry experience but have good academic qualifications (i.e. minimum two Highers in any of the following English, Maths, Biology, Geography, a science)

Career changers with reasonable level of experience within current industry but no forest industry experience

Units include:-

  • Mobile sawmills
  • Landbased engineering: Forestry machinery maintenance
  • Forest ecology
  • Identify tree species and their properties
  • Forest nursery practical techniques 
  • Supervisory skills in forestry and arboriculture
  • Woodfuel processing and supply
  • Coppice woodlands

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    Progression routes would be onto either the HNC Forestry or HNC Arboriculture and Urban Forestry programme at SCQF level 7, or into industry as an employed individual or as a self-employed contractor.
