Skillsbuilder 2

What is special about this course?

Skillsbuilder 2 - Part Time

Skillsbuilder 2 part-time is a course for learners who require a degree of support in their daily living and learning.

The programme offered has been designed to suit the needs and interests of students with moderate learning disabilities.

Classes are small to promote a supportive, nurturing and enabling environment. A Learning Assistant works alongside the lecturer to facilitate sessions and support the group.

Skillsbuilder 2 part-time works at a more gradual pace than Skillsbuilder 2 full-time.

Skillsbuilder 2 - Full Time

The full-time course (running Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) is aimed at students with moderate learning difficulties. You will develop confidence by working together as a team to participate in a broad range of subjects from science to cooking to rural skills.

It provides an opportunity to develop individual abilities and interests. Subjects include food preparation, arts, leisure activities and social events.

Classes are small to accommodate students and their support workers/carers. A classroom assistant is present in each session to support the learning needs of the students.

Skillsbuilder 2 is a three-year programme, which centres around healthy lifestyles, increasing independence and investigating the workplace.

Teaching is student led and they are encouraged to self-reflect and identify areas you want to improve confidence in. With students at the centre, they determine the direction of their study.

Students are also encouraged to build social networks, and activities outwith the classroom are encouraged including sponsored events, bake/enterprise sales and work in the community.

Students may stay on this course for a maximum of three years.

Both Skillsbuilder 2 Part Time and Skillsbuilder 2 Full Time are delivered at SCQF Level 2

"The classes are great, we do lots of different things. Being at college has given me lots more independence and it’s taught me to speak up for myself and ask for help if I need it – I never used to do that. I’m now being supported to get some work experience. I don’t think that would have been possible before. Coming here has given me so much more confidence. I love being here" - Amy Urquhart, Skillsbuilder 2 student

“It has been a delight to see students develop the skills, knowledge and ability to decide their long term goals, break them down into achievable steps and then pursue them with our full support, ”- Anne-Marie Harmsworth, lecturer, Skillsbuilder 2 Part Time.
