Steps for Engaging Young Children in Research

The development of the resource was led by a team from the University of Brighton, England, which included: Vicky Johnson (now based at UHI Inverness), Jen Colwell, Xenia Carvalho, and Andy West, with Roger Hart from the City University of New York.

A comprehensive resource developed for academics and practitioner researchers wanting to include the perspectives of young children in their research.  The resource begins by providing a series of six steps for developing a research process with young children.

  • Consideration of capacity and capability
  • Developing ethical protocols and processes
  • Developing trust and relationships
  • Selecting appropriate methods
  • Identifying appropriate forms of communication
  • Consideration of context
