About...
This qualification is the ideal starting point for those who have not achieved an English qualification and who wish to prepare for further study. You will look at a range of fiction, including a specified Scottish writer, and non-fiction texts in order to understand and appreciate the techniques writers use to create meaning and impact in their writing.
This course is delivered by blended learning, using an online learning platform, Webex and our virtual learning environment (VLE) called Brightspace. Learning materials will be provided through Brightspace. You will work through the learning materials and complete tasks as requested by your lecturer, including homework. During induction students will learn how to use the VLE, which is an integral part of the course delivery.

- Closed book assessment (potentially in November)

Course content...
This course offers you the opportunity to develop and extend a wide range of skills, including communication, independent learning, critical literacy, personal, interpersonal and team working, and creative thinking. In particular, the course will develop your ability to:
- listen and talk, read and write, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context
- understand, analyse and evaluate texts, including Scottish texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience in the contexts of literature, language and media
The evening sessions, which you will attend from home, are mandatory. Further to these, you will be expected to join a one-hour online tutorial once a week; this can also be done from home. There is also an element of self-study which will be required each week; students should allow at least 2 hours per week for this.
Where you can go...
On successfully completing this course, you may wish to progress onto study English at higher level (SCQF Level 6).
Entry requirements
You will require to have at least 3 passes at National 4 level.
An entrance test must be undertaken if you have not achieved an appropriate English course. You should apply for this course and sit the entrance assignment, if necessary. Entry will be at the discretion of the college.
