“It ticks every single box of my requirements,” says Eva Lovell of our BA (Hons) Moral and Philosophical Studies with Religious Education course.

“I am able to do it all remotely so I can work and keep up with family responsibilities along with my studies.”

Eva (34) from Helensburgh felt she had no real goal her in her career, before she became inspired to teach Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies while working as an additional support needs assistant at her local high school.

“I have previously worked in hospitality, the third sector and spent many years in early education,” she said.

“I never quite found my niche or my career and seemed to stumble from one professional role to another with no real goal. Following Covid, I became uninspired with working with very small children and looked further afield for a new role. I was successful in getting a position as an additional support needs assistant at my local academy.

“I was amazed by the depth of knowledge and 'out of the box' thinking exhibited when supporting in RMPS classes and thought that it would be something I couldn't get sick of doing every single day. So I started to research and determined that with my life experience there was no reason I couldn't become an RMPS teacher. I applied to UHI Inverness, had an online interview, started the next academic year and I’m well on my way to qualifying as an RMPS teacher.

“I decided to study with UHI Inverness as it offered exactly what I was looking for; a degree with teaching qualification included. I enjoy the interactions in philosophy classes and the friendships I have formed through shared experiences. My lecturers are really brilliant, and it is brilliant how efficiently my course has been run. All the lecturers have been clearly very educated in their fields.”

Eva enjoys the teaching placements that is offered in secondary schools.

“The placements are very beneficial as I am treated as an educator and not only a student,” she said.

“This allows to me develop my practice and confidence within different settings and has the added bonus of not allowing me to become complacent. The placements have allowed me to create networks through placements for future possible employment and mentors for advice.”

The interactions in philosophy classes and the friendships she has formed through shared experiences have also been highlights for Eva, as well as the style of teaching.

“My lecturers are really brilliant, and it is brilliant how efficiently my course has been run,” she said.

“I didn't expect to learn so much so quickly, the lectures are full of information and the recommended reading is very beneficial. The lecturers are really good at communicating and are very quick to email. They will always try to help you when they can and are great at providing resources to work with. All lecturers I have had so far have been clearly very educated in their fields.”
