Graduate profile: showcasing his work to a Hollywood star is Gary's degree highlight

Gary MacLennan’s standout moment during his six years at UHI Inverness was the opportunity to read his own creative writing piece to Hollywood actor Alan Cumming during a showcase event.

Gary (23) left Culloden Academy to study HNC Social Sciences at UHI Inverness and then progressed onto BA (Hons) Creative Writing in the Highlands and Islands.

Gary said:

“UHI Inverness has allowed me to help produce a book and get my work out there, while also encouraging my confidence to read it in front of people, such as Alan Cumming, as well as giving me a chance to volunteer at the Nairn Book and Arts Festival. This has allowed me to get a foot into the creative world.”

He enjoyed the end-of-year residentials, meeting like-minded people and being taught by ‘great lecturers who know their stuff’.

“All my classmates and lecturers were super supportive of each other and did great work that inspired me to reach my potential,” said Gary.
