Graduation 2025: UHI Inverness gave me community, opportunity and encouragement
Olivia Grant began studying BSc (Hons) Psychology at UHI Inverness during the uncertainty of the Covid lockdowns when she wanted to focus on something positive.
She achieved a first-class degree and is now studying for a Master’s in Sustainability and Rural Regeneration while working in community care and leading the village buyout of a local shop.
Olivia (23) said studying at UHI Inverness gave her the opportunity to continue her education locally, at a time when staying closer to home felt important. She is now applying her knowledge into making a positive difference in her community.
Olivia currently works as a Community Services Coordinator for Boleskine Community Care, while also leading on the community acquisition of Foyers Village Stores and being treasurer of Stratherrick and Foyers Community Council.
She said: “What inspired me most was the supportive reputation of the university and the flexibility it offered. I wanted to study in a place that understood the challenges facing young people in the Highlands, and UHI Inverness gave me that combination of community, opportunity and encouragement to take the next step in my journey.
“Even though I began my studies during the pandemic, I always felt supported and connected. Being part of a smaller campus meant I got to know my classmates and lecturers well, and that personal connection made a big difference. The friendships I made, the skills I developed and the confidence I gained are what I’ll take with me long after graduation. My personal academic tutor, Mari Todd, was amazing, she was always there to offer guidance, reassurance and encouragement whenever I needed it.”
Oliva says the research and critical thinking skills she developed will stay with her throughout her career in community engagement.
“I’m passionate about helping rural areas build resilience, create opportunities, and thrive, and I feel that my time at UHI Inverness has given me the foundation to do that,” she said.
