Art lecturer's work to feature in top exhibition

WORK by an Inverness College UHI art and design lecturer will feature in an exhibition in Aberdeen from next week.

Mark Lomax’s visual interpretation of how people store memory forms part of Gray’s School of Art Masters Degree Show, which runs from Monday 28th August to Thursday 7th September.

Mr Lomax is studying a Masters in Contextualised Practice at the School as part of his Continuing Professional Development with Inverness College UHI.

The Degree Show offers an opportunity to see works by Gray’s students in a range of disciplines from painting and print-making to sculpture, photography and social engaged art practices.

Mr Lomax, who teaches the Contemporary Art Practice HND and the Contemporary Art and Contextualised Practice degree, said: "Becoming an art student again has been a fantastic opportunity; it has given me the chance to explore my own creativity in new ways and has taught me that I share some of my own students’ attitudes towards deadlines, essay writing and hand-ins."

Georgina Parker, director of business development at Inverness College UHI, said: “The professional development of our staff is a key strategic objective.  By supporting Mark, we not only give him the opportunity to develop as an individual, he’s now able to transfer that knowledge and inspire the students he teaches at Inverness College UHI.  We are extremely proud of our Investors in People ‘Gold’ status, which represents our efforts and ambitions to develop and improve the performance of the organisation, through supporting our people to achieve their goals and be the best they can be.”

Mr Lomax’s work is based on Schacter’s ‘Seven Sins of Memory,’ which describes the various ways in which memories are lost and stored. In particular, Mr Lomax explores the three categories outlined by Schacter – The Sins of Omission, including transience, absent mindedness and blocking, The Sins of Commission, consisting of misattribution, suggestibility and bias, and The Sin of Persistence.

The show is open from 10am to 5pm every day.
