Commercial course a first for Highlands and Islands

A COURSE designed for people working in health and safety jobs is to be offered in the Highlands and Islands for the very first time.

Inverness College UHI will run a NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) Diploma from November.

The course is aimed at safety advisers, managers and supervisors with responsibility for health and safety, personnel managers and facilities managers.

Previously anyone who wished to gain this qualification had to study online and travel to the Central Belt to sit the exam.

Now they can come to Inverness College UHI to study face-to-face.

Georgina Parker, Director of Business Development for Inverness College UHI, said: “Inverness College UHI run a range of commercial courses to meet the needs of the local business community, from food hygiene to accountancy. We have offered the NEBOSH General Certificate at Inverness College UHI for several years and it has proved extremely popular. The Diploma is the natural progression for people working in health and safety, who want to further their qualifications. It’s also responding to a demand, which is not currently met in this area. Now people can study face-to-face with the support of qualified teaching staff with the ease of being able to sit the exam at Inverness College UHI, instead of having to travel.”

Inverness College UHI will work with training provider Astutis to deliver the Diploma, which involves six weeks of training over an 18-month period. Candidates who successfully complete the Diploma will have a qualification which enables them to progress to a more senior health and safety management/consultancy role.

Financial support for this course is also available through the Student Awards Agency Scotland if you earn less than £25,000. Information is available at www.saas.gov.uk.
