Some joined the course straight from school, while others returned to education to change direction. For Matthew Ferguson-Hannah the course has been life-changing.

“It has started a new phase of my life and has changed everything for the better,” said Matthew.

Matthew has been passionate about computing from an early age, having used computers since he was four. Despite already being largely self-taught, the course has given him deeper knowledge of the subject and introduced him to the social aspects of campus life after being home schooled.

Matthew said:

“After adjusting it has gotten easier and it is really a case of having the time to study and be willing to put the effort in. The lecturers are very kind and helpful, and the Learning Resource Centre is very nice to study in.”

Matthew is now focused on his future career goal of becoming a cyber security tester,

“This course will give me the certificates to allow me to start my career, which makes me happy, and I’ve also learned the skills I need which is great too.”

The course offered a chance to switch career paths for Rachel MacKenzie and she is already making the most of the opportunities on offer at UHI Inverness.

Rachel has recently been appointed as the new STEAM Student Technician Intern at UHI Inverness for eight weeks over the summer and is planning to progress to HNC Computing in the next academic year.

“I previously studied a degree but was limited in career options and wanted to change my field of work, so I chose to study again. This course offered many opportunities, and it is fun. I have enjoyed meeting my classmates and lecturers, they are all very welcoming and supportive, and I have gained valuable knowledge and experience.”

One of the standout aspects of her experience has been working with real-world cyber security tools, helping her build practical skills that employers are looking for.

Rachel's also taken part in a major Europe-wide Cyber Security Competition run by Cisco, and her team reached the semi-finals.

“I got to meet people on other levels of the course while working as a team,” she said.

This experience not only strengthened her technical ability but also helped her develop teamwork and networking skills - both essential in the cyber industry. Her advice to others is simple.

“If you like computers, take this course - it is worth it.”

It isn’t just for cyber security enthusiasts, it also supports students aiming for careers in software development, like Archie Holmes.

“I didn’t consider other universities because the location worked well for me and it offered what I was looking for,” he said.

Starting straight after fifth year at school, Archie has enjoyed the transition into college.

Archie said: “The course suits my interest and skillset and has helped me gain practical experience. I’ve enjoyed the freedom of studying at college and the respect from staff.
