Abi Maclean: 'I could not recommend HNC Childhood Practice more'

The course strengthened her knowledge and practical skills and gave her the confidence to pursue her ambition of a career in early years education. Abi will be progressing to study BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies at UHI Inverness in the new academic year.

Abi said:

“For me the true highlight of the course was how much it impacted me in a positive way. Through my classes, my student placement and the friendships I made throughout, they each allowed me to gain experience, knowledge and opportunities which have helped to develop my own confidence and have allowed me to thrive.”

The former Millburn Academy pupil studied a Foundation Apprenticeship at UHI Inverness during her last two years of secondary school to gain a Level 6 qualification in Children and Young People.

It allowed her to progress straight onto the HNC when she left school, which suited Abi because she wanted to stay close to home while studying.

“This was the right course for me as it included everything that I am passionate about doing for my future,” said Abi.
“It provided me with balance, by being able to study in college and carry out a placement in a local school nursery for part of my week. They both contributed to developing my knowledge. It also provided me with great opportunities for progression. It’s hard for me to pinpoint one thing that I enjoyed most about the course, as I found all of it really impactful and enjoyable.”

During the work placement Abi formed strong friendships and was supported by a mentor and other colleagues who made her feel part of the team and always put time aside to support and encourage her.

“I developed my own skills and knowledge in working with children, and I would not be at the level I am now without that setting,” she said. “I also really enjoyed my days in the college as I had great lecturers, who always provided support and taught in a way that met my learning style. No two days ever felt the same. I met a lot of people through my course, but I really clicked with two people in particular who stuck by my side, supporting me and providing me with laughter and joy throughout it all. I am honestly so lucky to have completed this course, as it has really impacted me in such a joyful way.”

Abi believes she benefited from being taught by supportive and approachable lecturers.

“We were always made aware that they were there if we ever had any questions, and they were so approachable, it was very easy to go up and speak to them if you ever had any worries or questions. They created such a welcoming and positive atmosphere where anyone could speak to them if there were ever any problems. I could not recommend the course more. Some parts can feel stressful, but if you carefully structure your time, and work hard on assessments, then it will truly be worth it. Make sure to balance working with having fun, and most of all just enjoy it. It’s only a year and it goes by too quickly. If I could stay on the course forever I would!”
