Mechanical Engineering
Engineers design, make and redesign the products and infrastructure we use every day.
By studying engineering you are learning valuable skills that will make a positive impact on the world around you. We offer a range of courses and apprenticeships that cover manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.
You will develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork and have the opportunity to work in a range of industries from robotics to renewable energy.

Apprenticeships:
Employers look to our pre-apprenticeship courses to find modern apprentices they can employ. Modern apprentices work, earn and study for a qualification, all at the same time.
Why choose engineering?
Technology plays a central role in our daily lives, and we rely heavily on the engineers who design, create, and continually improve the products and systems we use every day.
Engineers are problem-solvers who use creativity and imagination to develop innovative solutions across almost every aspect of life. They don’t just build things - they refine them to make them better. Their work tackles some of the world’s biggest challenges, from ensuring clean water and energy supplies to developing sustainable methods for growing food, building homes, and enabling efficient travel. To bring ideas to life, engineers apply a mix of skills including mathematics, science, design, computing, electronics, and construction.
Today, the engineering industry is evolving rapidly, driven by advances in automation and digital technologies - often referred to as Industry 4.0, or the fourth industrial revolution. This shift marks a new era of smart manufacturing, where data and automation are transforming how we produce goods.
In Scotland, the demand for engineers continues to grow. With new job opportunities emerging and many experienced professionals retiring, there is a strong and ongoing need to attract fresh talent into the sector.
Engineering touches so much of what is in our lives. When you think about it, energy, food, water, clothing – almost everything you use has been shaped in some way by an engineer. As an engineer you will get involved in some of the most amazing things you could imagine. The world needs engineers now more than ever. There are some extraordinary challenges for humanity. We are consuming increasing amounts of energy, and yet it is becoming increasingly urgent to address the environmental impact of our energy use. Engineering and engineers change the world, collectively.

What our students say
I knew I wanted to gain a qualification, but that university wasn’t for me. It was scary going into such a male-dominated field at first, being the only girl in my HNC class as well as being one of two girls in my SVQ class, but I have adapted to this well and it hasn’t hindered my experience at all, and I really enjoy it.
I enjoy the way I am being taught and I like that they are always available to give feedback and help. Before college I had no experience using hand tools and wasn’t confident using them, now I feel confident to carry out a number of different jobs. I have gained good experience working with new people and trying new things. I hope to continue this on site.
My advice to people considering an apprenticeship would be to jump at any opportunities that are offered to you and not to be afraid to make mistakes.
