Inverness College UHI students prepare for society's theatre debut

Students at Inverness College UHI are set to take to the stage at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, in an original production based on the characters in Grimm’s fairy tales.

The production, The Grimm Tale of the Huntsman, has been written by members of the University of the Highlands and Islands’ newest student society – The UHI Inverness Student Drama Society.

Tickets are now on sale for the society’s inaugural play, which will be performed by students at Eden Court Theatre on Friday 13th April, 7pm

The society was formed by BA (Hons) Drama and Performance students Laura Walker and Rachel Haston earlier this year.

Play director Laura (19), who lives in Inverness, explained: “The cultural and creative courses at Inverness College UHI are hugely popular and we both recognised there was a gap for a student drama society. We came up with a few ideas for our first play but the unanimous choice was to base our production around the fantastic Grimm fairy tale characters and the murder of the Huntsman. The story is set in a courtroom and touches on everything from love to jealousy and change. We hope it will be the first of many original productions for the UHI Inverness Student Drama Society, with the plan to write and perform a play every year.”

Rachel added: “The whole point of the society was to provide an opportunity for people interested in being part of a professional production wholly written, directed and performed by students. But, as we’ve discovered, it’s been about so much more, with students joining to build their confidence, make new friends and express themselves in a creative way. We’re having so much fun and loving every minute of this new experience.”

The society is now almost 20-strong with members taking on a variety of roles in the new production from script writing to stage direction, acting, set and costume design.

The students have hired the OneTouch Theatre for the play and will hold a Spring Ball at the Crown Court Hotel, Inverness, on 30th March to raise funds to cover the costs. Other fundraising activity includes a raffle at the Refreshers’ Fayre at Inverness College UHI on Wednesday 14th March.
