Dawn Livingstone (41) from Nigg joined the programme after switching careers from nursing to restoring vintage motorbikes. She returned to UHI Inverness to refine her welding skills and gain a professional qualification.

“I started my own business called ‘A Bolt to the Head’ restoring classic motorcycles, and I joined this course for peace of mind that I can weld safely and competently to ensure that any welding that I carry out is completed to a high standard,” said Dawn.

Dawn has found the learning environment at UHI Inverness supportive and enjoyable.

“The tutor is a good laugh and takes the time to show you how to do things if you are not sure, and the teaching style is laid back which makes it fun to learn,” she said.

Dawn is grateful for the support available to students on campus and the additional funding that has allowed her to return to education. They have all enhanced her learning experience at UHI Inverness.

head shot of Issac ChisholmIssac Chisholm (16) from Kirkhill has ambitions to be an underwater welder and knew straight away that the Pre-Apprenticeship Fabrication and Welding at UHI Inverness was the right course for him.

“I chose UHI Inverness because it is close to home and it offers good education. I applied for this course as soon as I heard about it and left secondary school when I was accepted,” he said.

“I love learning new things and the course fits my interests. The teaching is very good, and the lecturer is very friendly. I’ve particularly enjoyed the fabricating, meeting new people and being in the campus environment.”

head shot of Riley ShepherdRiley Shepherd (17) from Munlochy is studying the new Pre-Apprenticeship Fabrication and Welding course as his first step into the industry.

“I chose UHI Inverness because it offers so much variety and is close to home,” said Riley.

“It is my passion to become a welder and I’m enjoying learning all the different welding techniques. I feel the style of teaching is very supportive and this course will open up future opportunities for me – particularly the first-year of an apprenticeship. It is a good course, in a friendly environment.”

This new pre-apprenticeship combines a Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) and a National Certificate (NC) in Fabrication and Welding.
