Student story: 'The Highlands is the ideal place to study geography'
An ambition to be involved in conserving the Highlands for future generations led to Mhari Ross studying BSc (Hons) Geography at UHI Inverness.
Now in her third year, it is not just her studies that keep her busy. Mhari (22) from Tain also works as a Student STEAM Technician intern on campus, is involved in the UHI’s Industry Insights Programme and secured a summer internship last year as an environmental consultant.
She chose to stay in the Highlands to attend university because she feels the region is an ideal place to study geography.
“I did my Highers and a HNC in Applied Science at UHI Inverness, and that’s when I realised I wanted to be part of conserving the Highlands for future generations,” said Mhari, who is leaning towards a career as an environmental manager or consultant.
“When I saw that the geography course offered plenty of face-to-face time with lecturers, it felt like an easy choice. My favourite things about UHI Inverness are the sense of community and how easy it is to engage with lecturers and staff. The best thing about living here is being able to study in one of the most beautiful and peaceful places. The easy access to the outdoors really is not only enjoyable but really helps with mental health during busy academic terms.”

Mhari particularly enjoys the smaller class sizes, which make a big difference to her studies.
“You get more one-on-one time with the lecturers, which makes it much easier to ask questions and bounce ideas off them,” she said.
“I feel my studies have given me the academic knowledge and confidence I need in a professional setting. In the Employability Skills for Geographers class in second year, a company came in to talk about their work. I contacted them afterwards and secured a summer internship as an environmental consultant. I also work as the Student STEAM Technician intern which has been a great opportunity to begin developing myself professionally.
“This year I have also taken part in UHI’s Industry Insights Programme. This has just begun and I plan on having Teams meeting with my mentor once a month to learn from their experiences and hear more about their work.”
The class field trip to Iceland was also another great experience for Mhari, both academically and personally.
“I particularly enjoyed applying my academic knowledge in an international context. It was such an inspiring experience,” she said.
