For over a hundred years the UK has been losing millions of trees to Dutch elm disease (DED) - continuing to this very day, the disease has almost reached all corners of the UK. Elm (Ulmus) is part of the mosaic of native woodland in Britain and beyond, important for biodiversity but also with deep cultural ties. In this talk, I will discuss the place and role of elm in the landscape, the impact of DED and continuing efforts to innovate around the fight against the disease and restoration of the various Ulmus species. Can we adapt in time?
Euan Bowditch has a background in international forestry work and community engagement which led him to working at UHI Inverness and the Scottish School of Forestry participating in forest and tree-based research across Europe, UK and locally around the Scottish Highlands. He has a particular history in work around Dutch elm disease and wych elm focussing on their adaptation and continued survival. Now, he works as the Director of the newly established Cromarty Firth Watershed Environmental Trust building partnerships across landscape scales to deliver biodiversity-based programmes and projects across the region.
