UHI Inverness PhD Research Showcased in Short Documentary
James Macarthur, Institute for Biodiversity and Freshwater Conservation PhD student at UHI Inverness, appears in the Beaver Trust documentary “Balancing the Scales”, which explores the complex relationship between beavers and migratory fish. Produced by award-winning director Nina Constable and narrated by Dame Joanna Lumley, the film showcases research from Scotland, Norway, and North America.
Filming was conducted in 2023 and features research and experts from Scotland, Norway and North America describing their experiences and ongoing research with beavers and migratory fish species. During February and March 2025, more than 650 guests attended five in person premieres across Bristol, Inverness, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London. James took part in the Q&A panel at Eden Court following the Inverness premiere and is taking part in another Q&A in December at Holyrood as part of a Scottish Parliament screening.
James said, “Taking part in this documentary was a great experience which allowed me to showcase my PhD research in a different format and engage with new audiences”.
The film is now available to watch live on YouTube alongside a Q&A led by Sandra King (CEO, Beaver Trust) which features Nina Constable (Director of the Documentary), Chris Conroy (Fisheries Biologist, SSE) and Dr Robert Needham (Restoration Manager, Beaver Trust).
