Dr Lucio Marcello

Senior Bioinformatician

Lucio.marcello@bioss.ac.uklucio.marcello.ic@uhi.ac.uk

With expertise in the fields on parasitology, human genetics, population biology and environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring, I am passionate about collaborative research, and keen to further develop and integrate bioinformatics tools informing applied research in the Scottish rural and environmental sectors. I also have experience as a bioinformatics consultant for companies, building pipelines to automate bespoke analytical workflows.

Research interest:

  • Development of bioinformatics tools and workflows for environmental DNA datasets
  • Mapping and extending the application of k-mer analysis applied to NGS data (microbial classification)
  • Development / adaptation of genomic applications for serverless cloud computing
  • Investigating the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in farm systems
  • Reconstructing and validating mitochondrial phylogenies on incomplete datasets using imputation

Research project highlights:

  • Healthy soils: microbiome analysis of soil collected in grasslands with different grass composition, and its relationship to carbon and nitrogen cycling metrics (in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute)
  • AMR in farm systems: measuring the spread of AMR from livestock farms to the surrounding environment (in collaboration with SRUC)

Past projects

  • Cloudbutton (EU project): development of a serverless variant calling pipeline for adoption in cloud computing, in collaboration with URV cloud computing department (Spain)
  • AMBER (EU project): assessment of the impact of hydropower on freshwater ecology, by eDNA and other methods, with particular reference to the Upper Ness catchment.
