Our senior phase courses are geared towards developing key employability skills and designed to expand your awareness of a subject area to help influence your choices in the future. These courses allow you to progress through the different levels of study available within your area of interest. 

These courses count as one of your school column choices in your senior phase years and can be added into your existing school timetable. These courses are open to all students who would ordinarily be attending senior phase years within school.  

It is essential that you submit your application through the school application process rather than any full-time application routes. Applications submitted outside the school process will be treated as full-time applications and assessed as if you are a school leaver.

We are all exposed to so much information in our daily lives that it can be difficult to assess what is real and what is ‘fake’: HNC Social Sciences is the perfect course for students who want to develop the skills to search for the truth.

You will be supported to develop your critical thinking and your complex problem solving abilities by looking for creative solutions to social, political and psychological problems. The HNC Soft Tissue Therapy has been designed for those who want to perform hands-on treatments with people who participate in sport. The treatment could be designed to help an athlete optimise their performance, or help aid recovery from injury that has been diagnosed by an appropriate medical professional.

Achievement of the award will allow you to work with any athlete from recreational through to elite level performers. Investigative fieldwork will be carried out in local areas, providing valuable experience for future study in the sciences or employment in outdoor or science-related fields.

You will study a range of broad and up-to-date ideas relevant to the increasingly important role of environmental science in society.  The implications of these interactions for the future wellbeing of the environment in its widest context will be a central theme of the course.

This course has been designed to provide an additional access route to degree study in the built environment.

If you’re creative and interested in how buildings are designed, this course is for you. You’ll learn sketching, scaled drawing, and visual presentation techniques, and progress to 3D modelling using industry-standard CAD software.

Course Summary

This course provides a basis for progression into further education or for moving directly into training or employment in the motor vehicle engineering sector by developing the necessary generic and practical skills, knowledge and understanding and employability skills.

You will focus on the broad areas of automotive engineering, including mechanical, fabrication, electrical, electronic, maintenance, hybrid, and on an element of design and manufacture.

Course Content

  • Automotive Skills: The Garage – You will learn about the retail automotive industry and the range of jobs and responsibilities within it. You will also be introduced to health and safety in vehicle service and repair workshops.
  • Automotive Skills: The Technician – You will learn the names, functions and serviceability of automotive components, and how to work safely in an automotive engineering environment. There will also be opportunities to learn how to use a range of common hand tools as well as more specialised equipment, such as the torque wrench and trolley jack.
  • Automotive Skills: The Car – For this unit you will learn basic safety checks, wheel changing and valeting, as carried out by technicians in the industry. You will gain experience of removing and refitting vehicle service items.
  • Automotive Skills: The Vehicle Modification Project – In this project, you will apply all the skills you have learnt on the course, as well as solving the kind of problems facing an automotive technician.
